IELTS Academic Speaking Part 3: Interactive Band 7+ Tutorial (LingExam | Advanced Set 1)

Want to boost your IELTS Speaking Part 3 score? This expert guide teaches you the exact Band 7+ strategies for answering opinion, analysis, and comparison questions—step by step.

You’ll learn how to develop and support your answers, use advanced language, and speak naturally under pressure. Hover or tap each step for practical tips, examiner insights, and real IELTS examples.

Step-by-Step Strategy for IELTS Speaking Part 3 (Expert Band 7+)

1
Listen to the examiner’s question and identify the question type. In Part 3, questions often ask for your opinion, a comparison, causes/effects, or future predictions. Focus on keywords that show what is being asked—“why”, “compare”, “do you think”, “what are the advantages”.
Example: If you hear, “Why do some people prefer to work from home?”, highlight the “why”—the examiner wants reasons, not just a simple answer.
2
Give yourself 2–3 seconds to organize your ideas mentally. This pause helps avoid saying “umm…” or “let me think”. Quickly decide your main idea and how you’ll support it. You can even use a starter phrase: “That’s an interesting question…”
Example: “Well, in my opinion, there are several reasons why people prefer remote work…”
3
State your main idea or opinion first, using academic phrases. This shows you understand the question and can present your viewpoint.
Example: “I firmly believe that working from home offers more flexibility for many employees.”
4
Add at least one clear reason, explanation, or justification for your answer. Use linking words: because, due to, as a result, since.
Example: “This is mainly because it allows individuals to better balance their personal and professional lives.”
5
Support your explanation with a specific example, statistic, or real-life situation. Personal, societal, or even hypothetical examples are acceptable.
Example: “For instance, during the pandemic, many employees discovered that remote work reduced commuting time and increased job satisfaction.”
6
Go deeper by comparing, contrasting, or discussing the effects/importance of your point. This step is crucial for Band 7+.
Example: “Compared to traditional office work, remote working environments offer greater autonomy, although some people may miss social interactions.”
7
Link your ideas with words like: nevertheless, moreover, in contrast, consequently, on the other hand. Use a range of vocabulary (not just ‘good’ or ‘bad’).
Example: “Nevertheless, it’s important to consider that not all professions can be performed remotely.”
8
End your answer with a summary, a final thought, or a future prediction. This shows you can structure your response.
Example: “Overall, I expect remote work will continue to grow as technology improves.”
9
Maintain a steady pace, clear pronunciation, and confident tone. If you make a mistake, correct yourself and move on—do not pause for too long or apologize.
Example: “...offers greater fle—flexibility, I mean, for workers with families.”
10
The examiner may ask follow-up questions. Listen carefully and build on your previous answer—avoid repeating yourself. Use phrases like, “As I mentioned earlier…”, or “In addition to what I said…”
Example: “In addition to what I said, another benefit of remote work is improved health, since employees have more control over their environment.”

Pro Tips & Band 7+ Example

Tip 1: If you get stuck, paraphrase the question while you think: “That’s a complex issue. Personally, I feel that…”

Tip 2: Don’t worry about a ‘perfect’ answer; fluency, logical development, and range of language matter most.

Band 7+ Model: “I strongly believe remote work is here to stay, mainly because of advances in technology and the demand for flexible schedules. For example, my cousin’s company allowed employees to work from home, and as a result, productivity actually increased. However, I realize this isn’t suitable for every job, especially those that require face-to-face interaction. Nevertheless, I expect that more companies will adopt a hybrid approach in the near future.”
