12 Expert Steps for PTE Academic Read Aloud Success

1
As soon as the passage appears, scan the entire text quickly from beginning to end. Focus on the main subject, the type of passage (e.g., explanation, argument, description), and any unusual words or punctuation. Avoid reading word by word at this stage. Try to see the overall idea in one mental snapshot.
Example: If the passage is about ‘innovative energy solutions’, notice if it describes a process, argues for a benefit, or simply explains a new technology.
2
Identify and mentally circle any long, technical, or unfamiliar words or phrases. Break them down into syllables in your mind and quickly rehearse their pronunciation. Check if they have tricky stress or silent letters.
Example: Words like ‘photovoltaic’, ‘inevitable’, or expressions like ‘broader implications’ should be noticed and mentally pronounced.
3
Silently practice saying difficult words and full sentences in your head. Move your lips slightly or imagine the mouth shape for each word. Focus on how you would start and end each phrase, as well as the flow of longer sentences.
Example: Try ‘renewable infrastructure’ or ‘digital transformation’ in your mind to hear the correct sounds before reading aloud.
4
Break the passage into smaller “chunks” based on punctuation and natural pauses. Each chunk should fit into one breath for smooth delivery. Use commas, conjunctions, and periods to decide where to pause slightly. This helps with both clarity and fluency.
Example: “Recent advances in medicine / have significantly increased / the average human lifespan.”
5
Mentally underline important nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. These words carry the most meaning. Plan to stress them slightly more than the connecting words during your reading. This makes your speech sound more academic and confident.
Example: ‘technological progress’, ‘climate action’, ‘efficient resource management’.
6
Decide on a comfortable, steady pace and appropriate volume for your recording. Too fast increases errors; too slow may sound unnatural or not finish on time. Read a line to yourself at your chosen speed before starting.
Example: Try reading “Education reform is essential for future growth” at different speeds to find the most natural flow.
7
As soon as the microphone appears, take a deep breath and pause for half a second before speaking. This prevents your first word from being cut off and helps you sound more composed.
Example: Breathe in, count “one”, and then begin: “Global perspectives are increasingly valuable in today’s world.”
8
Emphasize key content words and use natural, varied intonation to make your reading lively and clear. Raise your pitch for new or important points, and lower it at the end of sentences. Show emotion with your voice—enthusiasm for positive ideas, caution for warnings, etc.
Example: “Effective leadership demands vision, communication, and integrity.” – stress the three key nouns.
9
Read every word as it appears—don’t skip, add, or change any part of the passage. If you make a mistake, correct yourself immediately and continue without pausing for too long.
Example: If you say “environmental” instead of “environmentally friendly”, quickly correct and continue: “environmentally friendly alternatives.”
10
Keep your reading continuous; avoid saying “um”, “uh”, or other fillers. If you stumble, just move on confidently. Pauses are best kept for natural breaks in the text.
Example: Do not say, “The, um, results show…” Instead: “The results show…”
11
End your final sentence with a falling intonation to show completion and confidence. Don’t add extra words or sounds at the end. Wait a moment in silence after your last word.
Example: “…improving standards of living for communities worldwide.” [voice drops]
12
Listen to top-level model recordings and compare your delivery to theirs. Focus on pronunciation, chunking, and natural intonation. Record your own attempts and review to identify areas for improvement. Aim to sound clear, confident, and professional.
Example: Compare your recording of “Digital connectivity expands educational opportunities…” with sample audios for tone and fluency.
