How to Answer PTE Academic Summarize Written Text: 12 Crucial Steps

1
Read the passage quickly to get the main idea. Identify whether the passage is factual, narrative, argumentative, comparative, or explanatory. This helps you choose your summary focus.
2
Ask: Why was this text written? What is the author’s main point? Underline or note the most important message or argument. This forms the core of your summary.
3
Pick out 2–3 key supporting details or arguments. Avoid minor examples or numbers. Select only those details that explain or justify the main point.
4
Notice the structure: Is it problem–solution? Cause–effect? Comparison? Chronology? This helps you connect ideas logically in one sentence.
5
Your answer must be one sentence only! Use connectors (such as ‘while’, ‘because’, ‘although’, ‘which’, ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘resulting in’, etc.) to link the main idea and key details.
6
Use your own words wherever possible. Show advanced paraphrasing and lexical resource. Avoid using long sequences of original wording.
7
Begin with the central claim or finding. Add 2–3 supporting details, linking with conjunctions and relative clauses for grammatical variety.
8
Use academic grammar and punctuation. Check subject–verb agreement, tense consistency, and formal vocabulary. Do not use contractions or informal expressions.
9
Count your words! If your summary is too short, you may have missed important points; if it’s too long, you may have included unnecessary details. Aim for 35–55 words for the best balance.
10
Check that your summary is logical, contains no fragments, and is a single grammatical sentence. Make corrections before submitting.
11
Use connectors (e.g., 'while', 'because', 'although'), commas, and sometimes a semi-colon for clarity and cohesion. Do not split into multiple sentences.
12
Familiarize yourself with factual, narrative, argumentative, comparative, and explanatory texts. Practice writing one-sentence summaries for each to master the task.
